Education Policy Series

We have started an education policy series consisting of a series of interviews with prominent community members. Our goal is to highlight various perspectives on academic rigor, how education is changing in current era, and lessons learned that may be applicable to Brookline.

Keeping / Restoring Leveled Classes in 9th Grade at BHS

The deleveling of 9th grade English is currently paused by Brookline High School but has not been taken off the table. For English, we support giving students options to choose the level that is right for them, be it college prep, a heterogeneous class, or an honors-level class.

For WHISP (9th grade world history), which was deleveled without a full public hearing in 2019, we continue to request its full assessment and a re-leveling of 9th grade WHISP classes at Brookline High School so that an honors-level 9th grade social studies class is once again offered.

Increasing Access to AP Classes at Brookline High School

Read our White Paper on the topic.

For sophomores and juniors in particular, access to core AP classes is limited at BHS in comparison to high schools in peer districts. See grid here.

Also see approximate college board recommendations by grade.
